Life phase

Parenthood

Roughly twenty-eight to fifty. A third person arrives who cannot pay for anything and cannot be left alone. The defining friction is that children need the same hours careers need, and every solution — daycare, nannies, leave, one parent stepping out — is a partial answer with a price. It inherits most of household formation's structure and adds a cost roughly equal to a house spread over eighteen years.

13 first-order frictions arise in this phase.
