What this actually is
The extra interest a company must pay above what the government pays, to compensate lenders for the risk it might not repay. High-yield spreads cover the riskiest borrowers. When spreads widen, lenders are getting nervous.
Why it matters to a person
The bond market usually sees trouble before the stock market does, because bondholders only care about being repaid, while shareholders can talk themselves into a story. Widening spreads mean the cost of borrowing is rising for exactly the companies least able to afford it, which is how a slowdown turns into defaults.
For scale
High-yield spreads sit around 300–400 basis points in calm markets, widen past 800 in stress, and hit roughly 2,000 in late 2008 and about 1,100 in March 2020. Sustained readings under 300 signal complacency more than health.
How to read a release
Reading it
Direction over level. A hundred-basis-point widening in a month has preceded most equity drawdowns of consequence. Spreads tightening while equities fall is usually a sign the equity move is positioning rather than fundamentals.
The mechanism
Widening spreads mean the debt market is pricing default before equity does; the two rarely disagree for long.
What to watch: High-yield OAS; investment-grade OAS. Arrives daily; the effect typically lasts weeks. Impact tier 1 — Regime-setting: Moves everything and sets the direction for months or years. These are the discount rate, the level of earnings, the availability of credit, and the shocks large enough to stop the economy. If one of these turns, nothing else in the list matters much.
