What this actually is
A single index combining interest rates, credit spreads, the dollar, and stock prices into one measure of how easy or hard it is to get money in the economy. The Fed watches it because its own rate decisions only matter to the extent they change these conditions.
Why it matters to a person
It explains the apparent paradox where the Fed raises rates and markets rally: if stocks rise and spreads tighten by more than the rate rise tightens, overall conditions have loosened and the Fed's action has been undone. Officials then talk tougher to get the effect back.
For scale
Tightest since 2009 in October 2022; loosened dramatically through 2023–24 despite the Fed holding rates high, which is why the economy did not slow as forecast.
How to read a release
Reading it
Treat it as the Fed's report card on itself. Loosening conditions with inflation above target means more hawkish talk is coming.
The mechanism
The composite of rates, spreads, dollar, and equities that the Fed actually reacts to.
What to watch: Chicago Fed NFCI; Goldman FCI. Arrives weekly; the effect typically lasts months. Impact tier 1 — Regime-setting: Moves everything and sets the direction for months or years. These are the discount rate, the level of earnings, the availability of credit, and the shocks large enough to stop the economy. If one of these turns, nothing else in the list matters much.
