What this actually is

Normally, lending money for ten years pays more than lending for two, because more can go wrong. When the short rate is higher than the long rate — an inverted curve — the bond market is saying it expects the Fed to be cutting rates soon, which usually means it expects a recession.

Why it matters to a person

Banks make money borrowing short and lending long. An inverted curve compresses that spread, so banks lend less, and less lending means slower business investment and fewer mortgages. The recession signal is not superstition; it is a description of a mechanism.

For scale

Inverted before every US recession since 1955, with one false positive in the mid-1960s. The 2022–24 inversion was the longest on record. The recession, when it has come, has typically arrived six to eighteen months after the curve un-inverts, not while it is inverted.

How to read a release

Reading it

Watch the un-inversion, not the inversion. And watch how it un-inverts: long rates rising (bear steepening) means inflation or deficit fear; short rates falling (bull steepening) means the Fed is easing into trouble.

The mechanism

Inversion has preceded every recession; the un-inversion (bear or bull steepening) is when the damage shows.

What to watch: 2s10s and 3m10y spreads. Arrives continuous; the effect typically lasts months. Impact tier 2 — Directional: Moves the index for days or weeks. Scheduled data releases, policy decisions, global spillovers, and the prices of money and energy. This is the tier most professional attention is spent on.
