What this actually is
On the first Friday of most months the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports how many jobs the economy added or lost, plus the unemployment rate and average hourly earnings. It surveys about 120,000 businesses and 60,000 households. It is the single most-traded scheduled release in the world.
Why it matters to a person
Jobs are income, and income is spending, and spending is two-thirds of the economy. But the market's reaction is counterintuitive: when the Fed is fighting inflation, strong job growth is bad news for stocks because it delays rate cuts. When the Fed is worried about recession, the same strong number is good news. Knowing which regime you are in is the whole trick.
For scale
A normal month adds 150,000–250,000 jobs. April 2020 lost 20.5 million in a single month. 2021–22 averaged over 500,000 as the economy reopened. By 2025 the pace had slowed sharply, partly because immigration restrictions cut the number of new workers available — which also lowered the number of jobs needed to keep unemployment flat, from roughly 100,000 a month to well under 50,000.
How to read a release
Reading it
Read three things: the headline, the revisions to the prior two months (often larger than the surprise itself), and average hourly earnings. Annual benchmark revisions have removed hundreds of thousands of jobs at a stroke, so treat any single print as provisional.
The mechanism
The most-traded release; good news is bad news when the Fed is fighting inflation and vice versa.
What to watch: Headline jobs; revisions; unemployment rate; hourly earnings. Arrives first Friday monthly; the effect typically lasts days. Impact tier 2 — Directional: Moves the index for days or weeks. Scheduled data releases, policy decisions, global spillovers, and the prices of money and energy. This is the tier most professional attention is spent on.
