What this actually is

The Employment Cost Index measures what employers pay for labour, including benefits, adjusted for the mix of jobs. That adjustment matters: average hourly earnings can fall simply because more low-wage workers were hired.

Why it matters to a person

Services inflation is mostly wages. If pay rises faster than productivity, firms raise prices or accept lower margins, and one of those two things shows up in your CPI or your portfolio.

For scale

Ran near 2% for two decades, spiked above 5% in 2022, and cooled through 2024. The Fed's rule of thumb is that wage growth of roughly 3.5% is consistent with 2% inflation given normal productivity.

How to read a release

Reading it

Compare wage growth with productivity growth. Fast wages with fast productivity are benign; fast wages with flat productivity are not.

The mechanism

Services inflation is wage inflation; the Fed watches ECI above all other wage measures.

What to watch: Employment Cost Index; average hourly earnings. Arrives quarterly / monthly; the effect typically lasts weeks. Impact tier 2 — Directional: Moves the index for days or weeks. Scheduled data releases, policy decisions, global spillovers, and the prices of money and energy. This is the tier most professional attention is spent on.
